If you have an email account at Outlook. You can also sign up for a new account anytime, choosing a new address at Outlook. Signing in to your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with a Microsoft account offers several distinct benefits:. Note that Windows telemetry data is tied to your device and isn’t associated with a Microsoft account. And, of course, you can create a Microsoft account and use it exclusively for signing in to Windows while keeping your email, cloud storage, and other services elsewhere.
But if you do use a Microsoft account for services such as Office and OneDrive, it makes sense to sign in to Windows using the same account. A local account is about as old school as Windows gets. You don’t need a network connection or an email address; instead, you create a username up to 20 characters and a password, both of which are stored on the PC where you create them and grant access only to that device.
There’s no particular security or privacy advantage to signing in with a local account indeed the lack of device encryption is a negative, in my book ; but if that’s your preference, you can do so when you first set up Windows 10 any edition or Windows 11 Pro on a new PC. The problem is always DNS. That being said, Have you tried another port elsewhere on the switch? You say you added a port to allow through. Unless something has changed recently, or there are special circumstances, in a Windows domain, with a Windows computer on the same network, to join a domain, you don’t need to anything other than provide the correct domain name and the correct credentials when asked. The firewall should not need to even be looked at.
I suspect something else is going on. I suggest changing the name of the computer to what it will be in the new domain while it is still in “Workgroup”, reboot and then add it to the domain.
Make sure you are not trying to add a computer that is already using that name in the new domain. Not sure if you have any connectivity at all. Are you able to ping anything?

Are your users doing a domain logon to the PC or are they doing a local logon? For the first logon it normally takes a little while to build a profile. I don’t use a domain and use the Credentials manager to store the passwords which get used for mapping drives. The machine error when joining a domain is quite common.

This is a fresh Windows 10 virtual machine I’m using to test the domain before I image all existing computers and join them to the domain.
It practically has nothing changed on it. I currently don’t have any issues with having to map the drives “again”. I’ll eventually have a proper logon script that will map the network drives accordingly. My issue at the moment is the “We can’t sign into your account” pop up box that appears immediately at logon of a domain user. I’ll play around with a bit and see if I can find a solution. You can keep going with this thread if you want. If disabled, the parameter won’t show. Then you won’t need to enable SMB1.

You do not want it or need it. Clear as mud? I have the registry modifications in place, and I was able to join the domain correctly using a test Windows 10 machine. It initially claimed there was no “computer account” in the directory, but it did appear server-side, and when I re-joined the machine it joined without error. But now I get the error “We can’t sign into your account” when login in with any of the domain users.
