Cronkite Agency Wins Big at Global Communication Awards

24 March, 2024

In a remarkable display of skill and innovation, the Cronkite Agency has earned international acclaim, securing multiple honors in the prestigious 2023 dotComm and MarCom awards. These accolades spotlight the exceptional work of the students from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the realms of communication, web creativity, and digital marketing.

The Cronkite Agency’s commitment to excellence was evident as they clinched a Platinum dotComm Award in the “Student Production” category. This top-tier recognition was for their influential work under the RWJF Southwest Health Reporting and Communications Initiative. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this initiative allows the agency to craft insightful campaigns that deliver crucial healthcare information to Spanish-speaking parents of young children in the Southwest region.

A standout project from the spring 2023 semester involved a collaboration with Every Little Step Counts (ELSC), a program geared towards diabetes prevention. The student team produced engaging video content that promoted healthy eating habits, under the guidance of RWJF professor of practice Nicole Macias. The team, comprising Yamileth Cabrera, Nicholas Elsner, Annette Garcia, Michayla Lopez, Daniel Ochoa, Mia Powell, Bella Schneider, and Annia Zavala, demonstrated their ability to create impactful health communication strategies.

Demonstrating their prowess further, the Agency was awarded a Gold dotComm Award in the professional “Social Media Campaign” category. This was in recognition of a campaign devised for the Arizona Foundation for Women, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing the status of women through various initiatives. The campaign focused on promoting the organization’s Moonlight Masquerade Soirée in February. Clinical Assistant Professor Abby Zufelt led a team consisting of Maya Badman, Yamileth Cabrera, Gabriella Herran, Madison Lovin, and Aleesha Singh, who combined creativity with strategic thinking to bring awareness to this significant event.

In addition to these triumphs, another Cronkite Agency ensemble received a Gold Award in the “Communication Plan” category for their work with Phoenix-based Wellkasa. This client is at the forefront of making integrative medicine accessible and safe for individuals with chronic conditions. The students involved—Doreen Ampofo, Charlotte Canada, Samantha Chow, Elias Johnson, Sarah Nguyen, Nicole Rossi, and Miya Whitaker—crafted a comprehensive media relations plan that spanned traditional and social media platforms.

The Agency’s success did not end there; it also garnered honorable mentions for various projects. These included a social media campaign celebrating the grand opening of FABRIC, a Tempe-based fashion incubator, an evergreen brand brochure for Oakley’s Oath in Scottsdale, and a news release for the Phoenix Suns’ 2022 Día De Los Muertos game night.

John James Nicoletti, Executive Director of the Cronkite Agency and Professor of Practice at the Cronkite School, expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments. He highlighted their unique opportunity to partner with clients to develop creative and effective marketing campaigns that have now been recognized for their excellence by industry professionals.

The dotComm Awards celebrate outstanding web creativity and digital communication. Entries span categories such as websites, videos, social media, and various digital marketing and communication programs. Similarly, the MarCom Awards is an international competition that recognizes excellence in marketing and communication materials and programs. Both awards are administered and judged by the Association of Marketing & Communication Professionals (AMCP).

The Cronkite Agency stands as a beacon of practical learning and professional growth for students at ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus. Through capstone classes at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, students get hands-on experience in creating real-world campaigns for corporate and non-profit clients.
